What is melasma? Melasma is a common skin condition. The condition causes dark, discoloured patches on the skin. The most common pattern involves the forehead, cheeks, nose, upper lip, and chin. Causes & Aggravating Factors Sun Exposure:  Melasma patches have a strong link to both ultraviolet and infrared rays. This means that if you are exposed to the sun's rays, the patches may darken or grow in size. Even short exposures can be harmful. Pregnancy:  The hormonal changes associated with pregnancy can cause melasma to appear in previously healthy women for the first time. Oral Contraceptive Use:  The estrogens and progesterone in OCPs can cause or worsen melasma. Medications:  Certain drugs and medications, such as antiepileptics, antimalarials, and some antibiotics, can cause melasma.
